MSU Department of HDFS faculty members and students recognized with awards, publications and in the news

2025 is off to an impressive start for the MSU Department of Human Development and Family Studies, with awards, publications and media attention. 

The MSU College of Social Science highlighted HDFS doctoral candidate Danielle Cadet as the February Access Torch, and highlighted alumna Emily Hamel as the January Access Torch.

Doctoral candidates Burcu Ozkum and Pendo Galukande were featured on WILX in stories about parenting and screen time and forming closer bonds with your kids, respectively. 

Dr. Amy Nuttall recently published her article, "Pinpointing the timing of prenatal stress associated with infant biobehavioral reactivity,” in Psychoneuroendocrinology.

“This work uses an innovative design measuring pregnant women’s weekly stress levels to pinpoint the specific weeks in gestation that impact child developmental outcomes in infancy,” Dr. Amy Nuttall said. “This work is part of the Michigan Prenatal Stress Study, an NIH-funded longitudinal study examining the long-term effects of prenatal stress exposure conducted through the Departments of Human Development and Family Studies and Psychology at MSU and University of Michigan Medicine.”

Dr. Chi-Fang Tseng received the NCFR Family Therapy Section Best Poster Award. Dr. Tseng’s presentation was entitled, “Emotion Access and Navigation in Chinese Couples: Insights and Adaptations From Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.”

In addition to this honor, she was awarded funding from the Dr. Gwen Andrew Faculty Initiatives Fund in the College of Social Science to support her proposed study,” Barriers to mental health access and defining culturally tailored intervention and delivery: Perspectives of Southeast Asian refugee adults.”

Additionally, MSUToday and WILX featured the MSU Couple and Family Therapy Clinic and MSUToday also featured Dr. Yijie Wang's work on sleep research recently published in JAMA Network Open. 

Recently, the department also hosted a workshop with the Center for Teaching and Innovation on AI in the modern classroom and a Bridgerton-themed tea party for Valentine’s Day.
