Dr. Laurie Bulock, assistant professor in the MSU Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS), has created a new podcast to help students hear from professionals about their career opportunities.
“The purpose of the HDFS Career Podcast is to bring on professionals from many areas that relate to HDFS to help students in this major explore career options. In each episode, I invite professionals from the community who have an HDFS background, or one that is similar to HDFS to talk about their career path,” Dr. Laurie Bulock said.
Dr. Bulock originally started the podcast for the students in her HDFS 270 Introduction to Family Community Services course to show them the variety of career options they have with their degree in HDFS.
“I also wanted to show them that career paths are not linear, and everyone’s path is different,” she said.
Another goal for her podcast was for students to have a chance to hear professional advice to help them shape their own professional development and networking.
For the first series, she interviewed faculty members, alumni, and other professionals who have careers within the field. After creating her first series of the podcast, she felt that all HDFS students could benefit from the information in the episodes.
“Laurie’s podcast is a fantastic resource to help students discover their passion, their next step, and where HDFS may take them,” said Dr. Amanda Guinot-Talbot, MSU HDFS undergraduate director. “I always talk to students about the power of informational interviews, and here, Dr. Bulock has done the work for them!”
