Justice based ethnic-racial socialization among caregivers of infants and toddlers: Initial measurement development to examine beliefs and practices.

Abstract: Ethnic-Racial identity (ERI) can be understood as the way in which individuals conceptualize and connect with their personal ethnic heritage and racial background (Umaña-Taylor et al., 2014; Williams et al., 2020). ERI is cultivated among young children through ethnic-racial socialization (ERS). While all young children experience ERS from primary caregivers, the process is not neutral (Bussey & Jemal, 2022). The ERS approach employed by caregivers can cultivate healthy ERI development, or harmful ERI development. I propose that the cultivation of healthy ERI requires the integration of a color conscious approach and an explicit social justice framework. The purpose of this talk is to 1) introduce the construct of justice based ethnic-racial socialization (JBERS), 2) outline the development process of two new measures and 3) examine the factorial structure of the JBERS construct by considering the subcomponents assessed in each measure together.
