Ciera Murden a junior in Human Development and Family Studies with a minor in African Studies made waves with one tweet “I’m starting a #BlackGirlMSU thread (use hashtag).” This was followed by another tweet in which Ciera introduced herself and told of her major and minor. The purpose, according to Ciera, was to create a network of belonging, a place were black women would feel comfortable, heard, and understood. After sending out these initial tweets the idea became a movement. This hashtag gained momentum and Ciera’s story became local news.
