Bio

Jiayi Liu (she/her/hers) is a doctoral student in Human Development and Family Studies with a concentration in Diversity, Youth and Family Development. Her advisor is Dr. Desiree Baolian Qin. Her research interests center on understanding Chinese family dynamics and the cultural beliefs, values, and practices behind daily family interactions. Jiayi is also interested in understanding the impact of societal contexts (e.g., SES, migration) on the well-being of children and their parents. She hopes that her research work will shed light on the shadow areas of families, their cultural context, and inform practices through a sociocultural lens. She is currently working on a qualitative study that aims to understand the parent-child relationship in urban Chinese families. Jiayi is also involved in studies that investigate the racial and adoption microaggressions experienced by adoptive families in the U.S. She loves traveling, photographing, and cooking.
