Early Childhood-General and Special Education Endorsement (ZS)
Current Certified Elementary Education or Special Education Teachers
Persons holding a Michigan Teacher certification in K-5, K-8, or Special Education (K-12) are eligible to add the Early Childhood-General and Special Education (ZS) Endorsement (formerly the ZA) to their certificate to signify that they have completed the State of Michigan requirements for teaching children birth through five years and are experts in early childhood education.

Courses are offered throughout the school year in the evening and laboratory sections are scheduled in late summer to accommodate teaching schedules.
Students may also be eligible to complete some of their coursework as a Study Abroad experience, or as a 5th year Elementary Education internship (global cohort) year. Application required.
Current undergraduates
Students in the Elementary Education or Special Education Teacher Preparation Programs should contact the ZS Advisor, Laurie Linscott at linscott@msu.edu for their options of adding the ZS endorsement to their degree program. Current undergraduates will be required to complete face-to-face courses and schedule their laboratory sections during the school year or summer semester with approval. Undergraduates must make an advising appointment with a HDFS advisor.
The endorsement requires 26 credit hours and includes the following courses:
- HDFS 211: Child Growth and Development
- HDFS 320: Interaction with Children in Groups
- HDFS 320L: Interaction with Children-Laboratory
- HDFS 321: Curriculum for Children (W)
- HDFS 321L: Curriculum for Children-Laboratory
- HDFS 322: Infant Development and Program Planning
- HDFS 421: Assessment of the Young Child
- HDFS 424: Student Teaching in an Early Childhood Program
- CEP 240: Diverse Learners in Multicultural Perspective
